Your strengths and weak points as a prospective English teacher

Dear FLE 404 members,
In this assignment, you need to critically analyze, describe and illustrate your strengths and weak points as a prospective English teacher. You need to give examples from your practice teaching experiences to illustrate the points that you make. You also need to illustrate what you are planning to do to improve your weak points as an English teacher.

  1. As an effective and prospective teacher,I have both strengths and weak points. For example,in my practice teaching,I had both strong and weak points during my teaching experiences.I achieve to have a good eye contact with my students and I tried to teach my lessons according to their understanding and their levels.I had also effective body language in order to teach the new vocabularies effectively. However,I had also some weak points as well such as,reviewing some parts of the lesson, not able to use the time effectively and give extra information after each activity.

  2. Of course every teacher has both negative and positive sides. My negative sides are that I think I am too good sometimes. I may give points that are not deserved. Also, I have to learn to control my voice, sometimes I shout loudly, and sometimes I am talking too quiet.
My positive sides are that I use my gestures and body language very effectively. The students will not be mored in my classes because I will do fun but at the same time effective stuff all the time. I can guess what the students like or dont like, so that will give me the opportunity to plan the lesson accordingly.

  3. I agree with you Canan! I am too good too. But not in terms of grades:) I am doing my class so easy that everybody can understand my lecture. So I do not need to give undeserved grades, the students already got the important parts. I have fun that is the only thing that the students should feel; "Let's have some fun!" That is the way I start to a class:)

  4. To start with the negative part, I may fail in teaching grammar sometimes. I pay attention to listening, writing, speaking and reading skills of the learners and then I might omit the grammar points, unfortunately. I believe I need to work on grammar more.

For the strengths, I can say that I am a happy, dedicated and motivated teacher. I realized it from the videos during my practice teaching. I enjoy interacting with my students. Through this, I reach my students and balance my work with them.

  5. In my teaching experiences, I have realised that I am scared of boring my students. I try not to have my students spend so much time on doing the same activity. I give them just enough time to finish the activities and read the answers right away. I should check if everybody is finished doing the activity or not and should slower the answering process to make sure the activity is understood correctly.
Secondly, as I dont like shouting, I can not manage my tone of voice well in noisy classes. I should shout more to get attention however, it is not my style and I prefer to take attention with other methods such as; by telling them that their teacher is going to give them an extra point if they complete the activity (which was true) etc. I know that it is not the best way to encourage students however, it was the only way at that moment.
As my strengths, I can say that I am a very patient teacher. After I watched my practice teaching video, I have seen it more clearly that I am very tolerant about answering any kind of questions and doing my best to keep teaching the lesson (because the class was very naughty and even their own teacher can not have a proper class session).

  6. As a negative side, I agree with Canan; I also am an over friendly and tolerable person, even in an undeserved case. I'm always smiling and I don't think the students see me as an authority. It sometimes helps to communicate efficiently and to relax students while doing a complicated task. However, in my opinion, a teacher should be seen as a 'teacher' while teaching, not as a 'friend' or someone who does not have the authority. Especially in a high school, students show respect only if they feel the dominant side of the teacher.
As a positive side, I can say that I am usually be able to make a balance between teaching rules, structure and playing games, having fun time with the combination of other skills. This helps me to keep the students' attention from the beginning till the end.

  7. During my practice teaching, I experienced both strengths and weak points.

Weak points: I forget correcting students’ pronunciation sometimes because I focused on the answer and students’ sayings. As a slution, I should be careful to check students’ pronunciation and sayings at the same time. Another weakness that I have was controlling the students at the back. When a student sitting on the first or second row asks me a question, I may lose the control at the back. As a solution, I can try to make an eye-contact with them and stand in central position in class.

Strenghts: I am a good communicator, and I enjoy sharing information with my students. I give enough time to do their tasks, and I want them to participate in class activities. I am a kind and an understandable person, so students say what they feel without hesitation.

  8. From my experience, I can say that my strongest point is my communication with the students. I think I can have a very good communication because I do not pose when I’m trying to teach something. By this I mean that I’m my natural self in front of the students, and the students feel this, and they like it. But on the other hand, me being myself while teaching proves me a weak point. As my students aren’t advanced level speakers, they sometimes cannot catch what I say because I speak a little too fast for them. It might do me good to speak more slowly… Another weak point that I have is that I do not know enough grammar to teach it explicitly. I need to memorize some rules. And my other strong point is that, I am confident in my creativity, and I plan on using it.
