A video on an effective English class

Dear FLE 404 members,
In this assignment, you need to find a video from YouTube,or TeacherTube on an effective English class from your own perspective. You need to illustrate and justify your points by giving examples. You need to focus on the following points:
a)In what ways do you think it is an effective English class?
b)In what ways do you find the teacher's teaching style, methods and techniques,his/her interaction with students effective?

You also need to illustrate the weak points of the teacher and the ineffective aspects of the lesson. You need to give the link to the video as well.

  1. http://www.engvid.com/ This video really explains the effective english lesson and the teacher really pays more attention to the differences between the similar words such as,loose and lose. She also emphasizes the differences between two words in terms of pronunciation. She also gives examples about the words so that the students can learn the form and the function of the words much more effectively and efficiently.

  2. The video I found is about a lesson which is grammar-focused and instructed by a native American teacher in Mexico.

In this video, the teacher gives a short description of the grammar activity about adjectives. She stated that to keep the students active and interested, there should be an exciting activity for learning English grammar. She prepared a "board race" activity in which the learners get in groups of 4-5. Each group tries to complete the chart by choosing the adjectives which take "more" or "-er". Through this activity, the learners become kinesthetic learners. Eventually, the team who wins gets a chocolate. Besides, for each adjective, the students give examples. I believe it is very helpful for the learners to use the new words. Also, she said that it is very important to be a role model by doing the first activity and showing how the activity works. In terms of taking every small detail about learners into account makes the teacher very effective. Her way of thinking about their kinesthetic learning skill makes her very remarkable for the learners.

  3. In video that I found is based on teaching English with games. Teacher wrote some vocabulary items on the board and divided the students into 2. Students are from different countries and different races obviously. But both groups are having fun in the first part. In other parts also, by playing games even if they are adult or young adult learners, they are having much fun while learning.

In the video, 3 examples of an effective English class by the same teacher is shown. Their aim is the same; in each video, we can see that the teacher tries to catch the students' attention with fun games and tries not to make them feel like they're in an English class, rather, they feel like they are playing games and having fun time without concerning about the lesson or the topic.

In this video-lesson, the teacher teaches many ways to say hello and goodbye.
It is an effective class because the teacher speaks loudly and clearly, he is acting funny and taking attention and he presents the lesson in a very enjoyable way.
A student watching this lesson would never interest in anything else because the teacher knows how to take attention and he is very funny and he explains everything very clearly, such as; where to use some expressions and when to use them is well explained and examplified.

In this video, students practice action verbs through the charades game, and I find this video effective because students can learn kinesthetically with the help of body language.
At the beginning of the lesson, the teacher shows demonstrations that help students to understand what they will do. He describes the activity through showing and using his body language. The effective part of the video is that all the students are active to find the action word. While students are playing a game, they are practicing action verbs.
In terms of teaching style, the teacher monitors students, and his position is like observer, but when it is necessary, he guides students and corrects the student’s pronunciation. Winner chart also creates competition in class, so each group member feel responsible for participating to find and say the chosen action verb.
Ineffective aspect can be the importance of gestures. If one student takes action that is not related to the verb, all the students may lead to the wrong guesses. However, it is an enjoyable and effective class activity that helps students to use kinesthetic skills.
